The film has an original story, but combines elements of the short stories ' The Adventure of the Six Napoleons' and ' A Scandal in Bohemia.' It is one of four films in the series which are in the public domain. It is also known by the alternative titles Prelude to Murder (working title) and Sherlock Holmes and the Secret Code in the United Kingdom.
